I really, REALLY wanted to start with www.nightblooming.com when I launched a stand-alone site. I had even looked into purchasing it as far back as seven years ago, but the
domain-squatting troll person with the domain wanted several thousand dollars for it. I’ve had a really good year, and nightbloominggarden.com was a great experiment that allowed me to see, tangibly, that I was getting results from a site off Etsy (even if checkout still was processed through Etsy).
But why purchase a domain whe I already had a functioning one? Domains are important, so much so that most the business recommendations out there are “buy your domain and then name your company that” or “buy your domain and then change your company name to that.” I was fortunate that the exact domain I wanted was for sale at all.
It was a gut-twisting amount of money for me, literally the profit from this entire year (and the increased etsy fees will gnaw up the rest). Still, I went for it and am re-investing in NightBlooming by purchasing the domain so I can do things in a way that allows my fantastic and supportive customers to purchase from me in whatever way works best for them.
For the moment nightblooming.com redirects to nightbloominggarden.com. Behind the scenes, my insanely talented and gracious friend will build out the site as Woo-Commerce. When it’s done, I’ll turn it on and flip the redirect around.
I am SO excited about this 🙂 So very excited that I will forgive myself for using three exclamation points up there.
This is kind of a long aside, but I really, truly appreciate everyone who sends supportive notes and believes in my ability to do this. When I have a dedicated Woo-commerce site and my books published I’ll be a few precious steps closer to the ultimate goal: quitting my day job and making a go of this madness full time. <3
