Etsy, after a spat of tests, has decided they’re really doubling down on the “free shipping” thing. They released this today, the very short version of which says that unless sellers offer free (domestic) shipping on individual items over $35 and/or free (domestic) shipping on orders totaling $35, your listings get penalized in search.
That, sadly, is more than I can ignore.
I won’t be able to see what these new tools and setups look like until next week, but here’s my tentative plan:
- Play along as much as I have to. It isn’t possible for me to offer free shipping on all my items (the really small oil vials cost almost as much to ship as they do to buy), so I’ll likely be doing the “items over $35/ total orders over $35 ship for free thing. This is going to necessitate some (minor) bumps in pricing because as we all know, free shipping isn’t free. Our lizard brain just likes the appeal even if we logically know it’s BS, just like how we know, logically that $2.99 might as well be $3, but our lizard brain perceives it as substantially cheaper. The net change here for my domestic customers is little to none. If your order is under $35 you’ll pay calculated shipping like always, and most the weight of the price increases will be to the items over $35, so the damage is largely self-contained to those listings.
- My internationals, I have a plan for you, too. The ONLY reason this change is something I feel I can’t ignore is search results. I need new customers to find my listings. But customers don’t need to find custom listings. I will know, using their tools, how much of the ‘cost’ of each item is going to be part of the larger shipping cost. So if you’re placing a large international order, I can round up all your stuff, weigh it, and make you a custom order. Hopefully this is an acceptable stopgap because Etsy is promising more tools do adjust to international shipping in the coming months, but I want to make sure you all are well taken care of until then.
I’m also up to my eyeballs with preparing to launch my first novel (which you can preorder now on Etsy!) and editing the second one, but I’ve reached out to my friend about doing a clean import of the blog from this site to nightblooming.com. We tried it once and it was a giant mess, but time to try again.
Once we have the main page and blog working, I’ll try my hand and building out a WooCommerce site behind the scenes so that, eventually, if people want ~free shipping~ they can go to Etsy / new customers can find me, but all my loyal customers can pay only the EXACT amount of postage needed to get their package from A to B.
I’m trying 🙁
I really, truly appreciate everyone’s patience and support. I promise I’m doing the best I can to juggle the realities of what I need to do to survive on Etsy and what makes my customers happy to purchase from me. <3
You’ll know more as soon as I do.
UPDATED 7/11/2019: They released the tools to me and the only thing that’s changing so far is that these 8 listings had $5 added to them.
If you’re within the US, that pays for the cost of shipping that item. If you’re outside the US and purchase one of these 8 listings, I’ll subtract $5 off your shipping total and refund you 🙂 Thankfully these are some of the listings I sell the least of, so the overall impact is slim to none for now!
